Technological Change Stress: When You Fear Letting Go of the Familiar

June 25, 2026 · 11 min read

Have you ever subtly changed the subject when AI was brought up, skipped articles recommended by algorithms, or found yourself unable to focus during an AI training session at work? It might not be an issue of laziness or willpower. Technological change stress is manifesting itself in the form of ‘avoidance.’

How Technological Change Stress Comes to the Avoidant Type

Technological change stress is the psychological burden felt when new technologies rapidly emerge. While it manifests as impatience in the anxious type and obsessive learning desires in the winged type, for the avoidant type, it appears as distancing that looks like indifference.

If you’ve ever opened ChatGPT only to close the window because it looked complicated, let conversations about AI pass by without much reaction, or said “I’m not interested” while secretly caring on the inside—that’s the pattern of handling technological change stress through avoidance.

Avoiding It Is Not Laziness

The desire to avoid does not come from a lack of willpower. In psychology, this is called avoidance-focused coping. Lazarus & Folkman’s (1984) stress coping theory explains it as diverting attention away rather than facing a situation perceived as a threat.

In the short term, it brings peace of mind. But in the long run, the avoided object starts to feel bigger and scarier. What started as “I don’t need to know yet” eventually builds into a vague fear of “Am I the only one falling behind?” over time.

The reason the avoidant type experiences so much technological change stress is also due to ‘future shock’ as coined by Toffler (1970). When the speed of change exceeds the speed of human adaptation, people instinctively choose to block it out. This is a self-protective reaction, not a bad personality trait.

Another thing—many times you pretend to be indifferent on the outside while caring more than anyone else on the inside. This is what psychology calls defensive indifference. It’s a self-protective mechanism of pretending not to know because you don’t want to admit your AI stress.

The True Strength of the Avoidant Type

Being the avoidant type isn’t just disadvantageous. The stability of keeping your own pace without being swept up by trends, the prudence of not making impulsive decisions, and the perseverance to excel deeply once you get used to something—these are the true strengths of the avoidant type.

In fact, research on psychology in the AI era classifies the avoidant type as the group that adapts latest to new technologies but utilizes them most consistently once familiarized. Fast isn’t always best.

Finding Your Own Pace to Reduce Technological Change Stress

Rather than forcing yourself onto the bandwagon, try starting with something very small.

10-minute exposure experiment. Throw any random question at ChatGPT. Something as light as “What should I eat today?” Do it out of mere curiosity without any grand purpose. Vague fears slowly solidify through a single small experience.

First write down what won’t change about you. Write down your strengths that are hard for AI to replace, the experiences you possess, and the value of your methods. Knowing what makes you solid keeps you less shaken in the face of change.

Don’t blame yourself for avoiding. Start with ‘It’s because I’m not used to it yet’ instead of ‘Why can’t I do this?’ Having self-compassion gives you the strength to face technological change stress.

Try using it with someone close. If it’s hard to face alone, try using AI tools with someone you trust. Research shows that artificial intelligence anxiety drops by more than half when there is social support.

Going Slowly Is Not Too Late

Even if everyone seems to be running fast, it’s okay to go at your own pace. Just not turning your back completely—that alone is enough of a start.

Try opening an AI tool today for just 10 minutes without any pressure. If you want to close it, close it. That small experience turns vague fear into concrete sensation. Little by little, at your own pace.
