Inner Child Healing: Breaking Emotional Patterns That Repeat Even in Adulthood

If your childhood wounds are still shaking your relationships and emotions

There are moments when you get extraordinarily angry in certain situations, get deeply hurt by trivial words, or become anxious for no reason. I don’t know why I’m like this either, and every time I promise myself ‘I should react differently next time’, the same emotions repeat.

This is not a weak personality. A heart that wasn’t sufficiently cared for in childhood is still alive in you as an adult. Psychology calls this the inner child. And understanding and caring for this inner child is the beginning of inner child healing.

What is the Inner Child?

The ‘inner child’ is a concept popularized by American psychotherapist John Bradshaw. It means that the emotions, desires, and wounds experienced in childhood remain exactly as they are in the subconscious. The body has become an adult, but in certain situations, those childhood emotions pop out.

For example, it’s like this. When receiving feedback from a boss, you can’t just take it as work feedback and your heart crumbles, or if your partner doesn’t contact you, you become extremely anxious that you will be abandoned. If the intensity of the reaction is too large compared to the current situation, the inner child is reacting.

Bradshaw referred to this as the ‘wounded inner child’ and explained that unmet childhood needs have a direct impact on adult relationship and emotional patterns.

Signals the Wounded Inner Child Sends

There are signals to check if inner child healing is needed.

  • You are uniquely and deeply hurt by criticism or pointing out.
  • When rejected, the thought ‘because I am lacking’ automatically comes up.
  • The closer you get, the more anxious the relationship becomes, or you push them away.
  • You hold back expressing emotions out of fear the other person will leave.
  • When alone you feel empty, and you feel safe only when someone is beside you.
  • There is always pressure that you must do well to be loved.

If you relate to not just one or two, but several of these, your inner child might still be in a state of not being sufficiently cared for. This is not a bad thing. Most people live with inner child wounds, big or small.

Why Does it Repeat Even in Adulthood?

The reason inner child healing is important is because this pattern doesn’t easily change with conscious effort alone.

According to Erikson’s developmental theory, needs that are not met at each developmental stage of childhood continue to demand fulfillment even in adulthood. For example, a child who didn’t fully experience safety and trust in infancy will constantly seek confirmation of safety in relationships even as an adult.

It can also be explained through neuroscience. The emotional circuits formed in childhood are deeply engraved in the amygdala. When a similar situation arises, the brain reacts automatically based on past experiences. This is why the body tenses or shrinks first before consciousness even intervenes.

Inner child healing is the process of changing this automatic reaction. Separate from understanding rationally, you must give the inner child new experiences.

How to Start Inner Child Healing

Picture your childhood self

Close your eyes and imagine yourself at 7 to 10 years old. Think about what that child wanted most, and what they feared most. It might be vague at first. As you keep doing it, what your inner child wants begins to show little by little.

Try talking to that child

This is a core method proposed by Bradshaw. Write a letter or speak to your childhood self from the perspective of your current self. ‘You must have had a really hard time back then. It’s not your fault.’ It’s okay if it feels awkward at first. This process itself provides the inner child with the comfort it hadn’t received until now.

When the reaction is big, pause and ask

When an emotion rises particularly high, ask this. ‘Is this emotion 100% because of the current situation, or was something from the past triggered?’ Just this one question can help you take a step out of an automatic reaction.

Inner child healing does not happen quickly. It’s a pattern accumulated over a long time. But from the moment you begin to understand, that pattern loses its power little by little. The fact that you are reading this article right now is already the start.
